Now that you have your Word Wall up and running it is time to think about how to have your students practicing those Sight Words. What are Dolch Sight Words? The Dolch Sight Word List is a list of commonly used English words that were originally compiled by Edward William Dolch in 1948. He compiled this list based on children's books of the period, and selected 220 words that children need to recognize in order to achieve reading fluency. Many of the 220 words in the Dolch List cannot be "sounded out" and must be learned by sight. The list is broken into many smaller lists. These are words that your students should be able to read easily, not necessarily spell correctly when they are writing. In order to help them spell the words correctly, you want to add these words to your word wall and encourage your students to "borrow them" when necessary.
